The Monster
We have never been a health focused family, until now. The scale has been a constant reminder, of all of those terrible choices we have made. I am sharing with you, not for sympathy, but to share our experiences, joy and sometimes pain in this journey.
We have had a scale in our home for years. I think Mike Sr., is the only person who regularly weighed himself. I certainly didn’t weigh myself. In fact, I even declined at all doctor appointments. Only weighed myself when I started my next fad diet. With that being said, I certainly would NEVER make my children track their weight, and get on what I called ”The Monster”.
As a child growing up, the scale had been my enemy. If I lost weight a food treat would follow. If I gained, then another crash diet would start. I have memories of being very young, and having the doctor tell my mom that, I was fat and she should try to control my eating. This helps understand why the scale and I were NOT friends.
Now, fast forward to our fabulous new chapter, we are starting, of our lives. We are learning, that all measurements are so important. We measure and weigh and keep track of all sorts of things, in our daily journals, to help us figure out what is happening in and to our bodies. The scale is one measly indication.
As a family, we decided to own it! We call aloud our number as we weigh/track. Our number, on the scale, is just that and guess what…..the monster left the building, and has left behind, a friend that helps us stay focused and on track!
